Focused Sun produces "Thermal" solar energy systems. We collect the sun's heat during the day and store it internally until it's needed -- in the evening or at night. Our Microgrid module mounts its linear Fresnel mirrors on top of a 20' (6 m) half container. Inside the container is the heat storage, a 10' (3 m) x 3' (1 m) D cylinder of concrete. Also inside is a turbine generator that converts 300C steam into electricity.
The Microgrid unit provides 2 kW of electrical power plus an additional 15 kW of heat. The excess heat can cut energy costs in half for chiller cooling, desalination, space heating, industrial heat, fabrics and food.
The Microgrid is also an important sales tool. Most prospective customers do not understand how solar thermal works: how do you take the warmth of the sun and do useful tasks with it? With a Microgrid on site, the factory can show them the physics of operation. Nothing is quite as emphatic as a prospect feeling the hot pipes from heat stored overnight.
Costs are approximately $3/W, about equal to a PV + battery system of the same collecting area. Energy costs for only the electricity portion are about 0.15/kWhr. By using the “left-over” or waste heat from the turbine, supplies energy for other processes.

The cutaway shows the Fresnel solar array on the roof of the container with piping to the the concrete heat storage cylinder inside. That cylinder is thermally isolated from the outside to prevent heat loss. It can store energy for as long as a week. When available, heat energy is available for the on-board turbine that converts the stored heat to electricity.
